      Eric Arthur Blair was born in British-occupied India; he took on the pen name 'George Orwell' in 1933. In 1936, he went to fight for the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War and was wounded, and from then on was never fully fit. His literary career lasted around ten years and included criticism, radio commentary, and the bestselling novels
"Animal Farm" [1945] and "Nineteen Eighty-Four" [1949].
Blair/Orwell died of tuberculosis in London in 1950.
