1965 June: Landmark privacy decision Griswold v. Connecticut.

1971 June: The 'Pentagon Papers' were published by the The New York Times and The Washington Post, followed by the persecution of Daniel Ellsberg.

The PATRIOT Act enacted on 26 October 2001
PATRIOT Act II (USA PATRIOT Improvement and Reauthorization Act of 2005) enacted on 8 March 2005
The USA Freedom Act enacted on 2 June 2015

2010 October: 'Iraq War Logs' documents published on Wikileaks, followed by the persecution of Bradley/Chelsea Manning and Julian Assange.

2013 June 6: Publication in The Washington Post and The Guardian of London U.K. of leaked documents describing the N.S.A.'s broad-based unwarranted surveillance programs, including PRISM. Whistleblower Edward Snowden obtained a leave of absence from his civilian job with Booz Allen Hamilton in Hawaii in May, released those documents to the journalists, and fled to Hong Kong. He went undercover and has been seeking political asylum, first in Iceland, then South America, then in Russia. He has been on temporary asylum in Moscow since 2013.

Edward Snowden won the Sam Adams Award for Integrity in Intelligence [est. 2001] in 2013, the Right Livelihood Award, the German Whistleblower Prize,
the Ridenhour Prize for Truth-Telling, and the Carl von Ossietzky Medal from the International League of Human Rights.

late 2014: Arundhati Roy, John Cusack, and Daniel Ellsberg travelled to Moscow to meet with N.S.A. whistleblower Edward Snowden; one result was a series
of essays and dialogues in which Roy and Cusack reflect on their conversations with Snowden {see 2016 book below}.

2018 May 25: The General Data Protection Regulation of the European Union goes into effect; the law was adopted in April 2016 with a two-year transition period. The new rules on data protection and privacy for all individuals within the European Union give control over their personal data to citizens and residents and are being adopted by major and minor internet businesses in America and elsewhere so that they can continue to operate in European countries.

2019 Oct 30: Official publication date of Snowden's memoir "Permanent Record"; the book had languished at #25 in pre-order but jumped to
