" V I R T U A L    T E A    P A R T Y "
------------------------------------------------

        Thorstein Veblen documented 'Conspicuous Consumption' a hundred years ago, and for the most part, that is still what drives the U.S. (think: modern or Western) economy. You don't need a new car, nor a TV set another six inches bigger than the last one, nor the newest, latest sports equipment – but if you don't put all that stuff on your charge card, then the economy will collapse. The current economy is built on the principle of 'Virtual Money'.

        Before America existed, men would learn a trade by apprenticing themselves to a member of a guild, working for next to nothing while in training, eventually fulfilling the contract and becoming a journeyman or an independent businessman, and eventually making deals with apprentices of their own, and so on. A similar procedure was the indentured servant, who would receive passage to the New World, to be paid off by certain work for a finite time, after which they would have fulfilled the contract and become free and independent persons.

        The Oligarchy entices you all with goods and services that you do not need, and you agree to pay as much as 25% interest per year on ephemeral pleasures and goods designed to break right after the warranty expires. You are indebted to the Oligarchy, held in absolute thrall to them in no different fashion than the indentured servant of two hundred years ago. Except there is no end to the modern 'contract'.
        (Everybody whose charge cards all have a zero balance this month, raise your hands. I thought so...)
        Nothing much has changed in 200 years, except the invention of the plastic credit card to take care of the accounting.

        The money that you owe on your personal credit cards keeps you under the thumb of the Oligarchy. If some bad thing occurs and your credit card accounts are closed, you will be very upset because you are no longer a member of the Consumer Class. (The poor imitate the Virtual Money Game, loan sharks take advantage, and Organized Crime often profits instead of the Oligarchy – same game, different fiefdom!)

        The problem is that the Oligarchy keeps raising the ante, so that consumer debt is presently $1.6 trillion [Oct 2001 G19 Report], which is UP 37% since 1996! Do the math: the Oligarchy will reap a minimum of $250 billion dollars this year because you are trained very well to live outside your income. This is $850 per year from every man, woman, and child in America, or more to the point: $1700 for every worker – a hidden tax that you hand over to the Oligarchy merely because they want it. [On top of your share of the National Debt, which is $20,700; the interest on the total $5.9 TRILLION figure is paid to the Oligarchy!]
        No actual value is produced from this arrangement, no labor activity occurs, but the Oligarchy – the proverbial 'company store' – reaps usurious profit, and nobody can stop the machinery.
        Want to know the truth in your case? Add up the little note on every year-end charge card bill – gas, credit, department store – plus your year-to-date mortgage interest and the year's interest on your car payments. Add it ALL up! You hand this amount over to the Oligarchy every year for the privilege of living on credit, for the fleeting use of Virtual Money.

*          *          *          *
TEA PARTY TIME!
        I do not figure that readers of WMail are yet large enough in number, nor committed enough to Objective Reason, to pull a John Galt and stop the Engine of The World, which function the concept of Virtual Money serves.
        But wouldn't it be cool if you were one of the Bostonians of 1773 who decided to protest British policies and dressed up as Native Americans [Mohawks] and dumped 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbor.
        But those of you who choose to participate in this proposed Virtual Tea Party will have stood up as those Colonists did, making a political statement as well as freeing your Selves from servitude to the Oligarchy.

        So here is how the Virtual Tea Party works: Very simply, pay off all credit cards forthwith, and cut all but one (the cheapest, for emergencies) to pieces. Pay down your mortgage, with double or triple payments. Do not buy a new (or used) car or other major appliance or fancy toy until you can pay cash for it.

        Who knows how many millions of Virtual Rebels it will take to participate thus to break the back of the Oligarchy, but even in small numbers, a Stand For Independence will have been taken, and you will be one of the Rebels, and you don't even have to dress up in feathers and red paint. BUT you will have bragging rights as a participant in the Virtual Tea Party, plus the money you save – and remove from the coffers of the Oligarchy – is yours to keep.

        Eliminating all Virtual Money from your personal and business finances will remove you – the person sitting in your chair, and your family and friends and co-workers who participate – from unending enslavement by the omni-powerful Oligarchy. And when this job is done, you will stand as a Free Individual.
        And the Free individual is duty bound to free others, to Empower. Pass it on...

        For as Dr. Martin Luther King jr said: "Until all are free, none are free."

" E L E C T R O - M A G N E T I C    R A D I A T I O N "
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

        People seem crazier these days, more up-tight, irrational, more and more driven. In general, all over the planet, and all the time. No real difference before or after 9-11-01 and the U.S.-Afghan War – life proceeds at an increasingly hectic and frantic and purposeless pace, new generations scramble to survive, to 'make it', as the poor get poorer and more afraid, and the rich get richer – and more afraid of the poor.

        So where does this common increased anxiety come from? Why such a need to get somewhere at double-quick time, like human sled-dogs staring at the ass of the dog just in front, with no knowledge of where the journey has brought us, much less where we are ultimately headed? Run, run, run – don't dare stop – hafta, hafta, hafta.

        Consider this: In all of human history, back hundreds of thousands of years, electro-magnetic radiation [E.M.R.] did not exist. Nikola Tesla (one of my primary heroes; link below) invented broadcast radio in 1893. Your school no doubt taught you that it was Marconi who invented radio: just another lie from the Culture-Structure. The U.S. Supreme Court vindicated Tesla's priority in the invention of radio in a case that was finally decided in June 1943, five months after Tesla's death at 86. Marconi's work was based on 17 of Tesla's patents!
        Tesla also invented polyphase alternating current, the A.C. that powers virtually every device in your home or office, which invention earned him the lifelong enmity of Thomas Alva Edison, whose economic interests lay in D.C. [direct current] power.

        Just over 100 years ago. When the telegraph was state-of-the-art.
        And look at what the gods have since wrought:

»»»»  RADIO: Broadcast in all of its A.M. & F.M. frequencies, plus short-wave in hundreds more frequencies, so that international radio receivers that pick up the B.B.C. worldwide network and Voice of America look like an airplane cockpit. The 'Silent Radio Network' – those receivers high on the wall displaying news bulletins moving across red lights – is still operating, though long absent from my local post office.
        Besides the simple receivers, there are a myriad of two-way radio systems, such as for taxicabs and truckers and police, and C.B. (citizens band) frequencies, and 'ham radio' for emergencies.
        Hundreds of frequencies beamed thru buildings and cars and human bodies 24 hours every day, with enough strength to be picked up by a Radio Shack receiver powered by two AA batteries.

»»»»  TELEVISION was first restricted to the dozen V.H.F. channels – two thru thirteen – beamed down from atop local mountains. Then came U.H.F.'s further hundred or so channels. Then satellites, beaming down a thousand channels to your local network stations and cable providers, picked up by those 60-foot dishes lurking behind warehouses here and there. And more satellite channels beamed to the houses of you and your neighbors, whether or not you have a dish on your rooftop.

»»»»  TELEPHONES: Cellular phones are obvious, with each cell defined by the ugly antenna-ed towers about every mile or so in urban areas. But don't forget satellite phone access from the boonies, and the microwave towers that phone companies use to transmit locally, and portable phones right in your living room or bedroom.
        Most importantly, though, is the fact that all telephones are two-way conversations. So every third automobile or truck or bus within a mile of you is adding one more signal to the cacophony, each signal strong enough to be picked up three levels down in the parking garage or by the relay satellite 50 miles above your head.
        Same for pagers and beepers and wireless handhelds.

»»»»  RADAR (also invented by Tesla): Airplanes above, highway patrol at ground level, and sonar beneath the sea. And you probably never even heard of the semi-secret H.A.A.R.P. Project up in Alaska, beaming signals down to the Lower 48, possibly attempting to control the weather.

»»»»  AIRPLANES: Besides radios and radar and loran, they have all manner of on-board gear, including transponders that send a constant signal to report the aircraft's location. Plus the 'black boxes' that activate upon crash landing.

»»»»  MICROWAVE OVENS: At home and office, plus every fast food restaurant, and even 'slow food' restaurants use them. Strong enough several feet away to mess up grandpa's pacemaker. (And don't forget what runs the pacemaker: electro-magnetism!)

»»»»  GARAGE-DOOR OPENERS: Your neighbor pushes the clicker button to exit or enter the garage, and the signal passes right thru your bedroom – and right thru your children's bodies, too.

»»»»  SECURITY: Every time you press the button on your key chain, a little signal passes thru the craniums of anyone in the parking lot that is anywhere between you and your car, and beyond. Plus those little gas company key chain things, like Mobil Pass, and security tag scanners at the exits of stores that YOU walk thru, going in and out.

*          *          *          *

        But radio and TV and household appliances, as much they bombard the living cells of our bodies, are merely the obvious sources, because you use them daily. All electro-magnetic equipment produces a force field at best, and at worst produces serious leakage.

»»»»  COMPUTERS: When I was in the Air Force, programming IBM 1401 equipment, one of the cute demonstrations of the Magic of Computers was to load a particular card deck and then place a standard transistor radio atop the mainframe cabinet. We had two versions: one played "The Star-Spangled Banner", and the other (courtesy of a nearby Navy storage facility) of "Anchors Aweigh". And the really scary part of the demo was when we realized that the transistor radio delivered the music just as well with the power of the radio OFF – the EMR was strong enough to power the speaker all by itself!
        Included in this category are A.T.M. machines, automated gas pumps, cash registers, video games, and lots of hardware in the workplace.

»»»»  VIDEO SCREENS: Put a sheet of paper about an inch in front of any modern PC video screen, and then push the power button ON. The static generated will suck the paper flat up against the glass – right where you put your face eight or more hours every day.

»»»»  POWER LINES: The folks who believe that living underneath high-tension electric power transmission lines causes cancer have not been able to prove their case without a doubt. But I will never buy or rent any place within a mile of such lines. Nor of cell phone towers. Nor of radio or TV towers.

»»»»  G.P.S.: Global positioning satellites, so your car knows where it is, and people in a different time zone know where your car or cell phone is at all times.

*          *          *          *

        As much as you might want to escape this bombardment of your body by thousands of EMR frequencies every moment of every day, there is no way to avoid them. Cell phones operate just fine in the Arctic or in Tahiti. Park your RV anywhere in America and your satellite TV dish will bring you reruns of Gilligan and Lucy. Perhaps the bottom of some mine or one little nook somewhere in the Grand Canyon is protected, but what do you do if you get a hankerin' for a pizza? Right back out into the EMR blizzard.

        There is a British legal term of 'not proven', where guilt is probable but the evidence is not strong enough to convict. The same is true for high-tension power lines being a cause of cancer, or EMR being the cause of anxious citizens: not proven.
        We cannot yet prove that Mankind's wasteful habits are the cause of global warming, but global warming is now known to exist: Acid rain is no longer news, though forests across America are stunted and dying. The oceans are rising, the glaciers in Africa disappearing, the Arctic tundra melting, icebergs the size of Manhattan are breaking off the Antarctic continent, the tree line for various species is moving higher and higher each year.
        We cannot prove that EMR is the cause of cancer or societal malaise or road rage or other ills.

        But what Reason gives us is this: For millions of years the planet was in balance, and though Mankind struggled to put food on the table and to live in peace with the neighbors and other predators, the struggle was not for survival as a species, but only to develop skills enough to live a long life, to be healthy, perhaps to express a little of oneself thru art or craft, to give a better life to one's children.

        So why is the entire biosphere now struggling to survive, to maintain ecological balance? What activities of Mankind hinder the survival of the biosphere?

        No cause is proven. But the rapacious consumption of fossil fuels to generate the electricity to power your dozens of electrical appliances cannot improve air quality. How many of you sit there in a household with half a dozen TV sets, with family members often spending hours with a cell phone in one hand and game stick or wireless mouse in the other?
        This cannot be necessary to your biological well-being. Your body has no protection against EMR, nor is there anywhere to hide. Maybe a lead-lined pyramid hat? Naw, I don't think so.

        You cannot protect yourself or your loved ones from EMR, but the action that you can take is to stop producing EMR.
•• Sell the TV sets, the cell phones, the Walkman devices, all the high-tech doodads. Keep the computer, do email, but read books & newspapers – and slow yourself down.
•• Take a walk to relax: do just the one thing: walk. Or run, or work out at the gym. Do so without headphones pumping EMR into your brain.
•• Meet your neighbors. (How many do you actually know?) Meet your spouse and children, for godsakes.
•• Keep the use of electricity down, and reduce it further as an ongoing commitment, and you will help save the planet (and save a few bucks, too, as icing on the proverbial cake).

        If enough people learn to kick the habit of over-use of EMR, perhaps the EMR jim-jams will go away, and Mankind can live a simpler, de-stressed life.
        And then we can begin to give thought to the matter of who has been leading Mankind on this path to biological destruction, and away from the possibility of inner peace, of biological integrity – a state not available inside an environment bombarded by thousands of EMR frequencies from every direction in three dimensions, all day, every day.

        Or turn on your TV and bask in all those EMR signals and watch Mankind self-destruct.

        Silence is better. You have the power to turn the humming machinery of the Culture-Structure to the OFF position. Click! Click, click, click, clickety.
        The Silence will reward you.

" T A X    R E V O L T "
------------------------------------------------

        The U.S. Supreme Court gave the Presidency to George Dubya Bush by fiat, though Gore-Lieberman won the popular vote. Many of the people that Dubya placed in his Cabinet and other offices are determined to do things their way, Constitution be damned. The Afghan War has been used as the pretext for blatant proposals to circumvent Due Process, et cetera.

        It has been a long time since the United States of America has been a democracy, sorry to say. We live now under a very solid and powerful Oligarchy, whose collective response to the tragedy of 9-11-01 was the admonition to "Buy American".
        If you obey this directive, then you have sold your Soul – you give allegiance to the false promise of the musty materialist, unattainable American Dream.

        But the Individual – the few left unattached to the Collective (that obstructionist force described by Ayn Rand) – can take simple actions to thwart the mendacious intentions of the Oligarchy. And it will be rather fun, because to thwart an intention is to make the generator of that intention mad. If enough people join in such a project, then the Oligarchy will be furious – perhaps even to the extent that open class warfare will result.

*          *          *          *

        The Individual Working Mind can exercise his/her Freedom by taking one or more of the following actions:

THRIFT
        Pay off all debt. The ten to 25 percent A.P.R. that you pay on credit card and other debt goes directly to the Oligarchy, and, anyway, the principal is in payment for toys that you do not need.
        Keep your automobile for five years, rejecting the ad-driven impulse to replace it every year or two. If your vehicle requires more maintenance than the cost of your insurance, then it may be time to replace it. If this happens before the five years, then it is a lemon, and you should buy a very different brand next time around.
        Make double payments on your mortgage, which will save you thousands of dollars over time – and you will keep those thousands out of the coffers of the Oligarchy.
        Spend time with your children & family without spending money. Play with them in person. Talk to them, teach them a skill (or learn a skill from them). Read to them, and discuss what you have read. Visit the library together – or even a house of worship – on a regular basis. Better yet, visit a dozen places of worship and a dozen museums together.

CITIZENSHIP
        Since you will spend less time shopping, less time in lines and parking lots, you can use that time to participate in governing your local and national environment. As above, take your children to a dozen government meetings: city councils, state legislatures, courtrooms, rallies.
        Vote! In every election. And take your kids along to the polls: Teach by example.
        If you find yourself so inclined, join a group and become active in its purpose. The mature Working Mind will relish the chance to use Reason to halt the Forces of Endarkenment in any local arena. Empower some organization by your presence and participation as a Stand For Empowerment, for the Fulfillment of Mankind's Potential.

PASSIVE RESISTANCE
        Immediately fill out a W4 form and specify nine deductions. Just ask in Personnel and fill it out and sign it, no explanation necessary. Diligently set aside your taxes owed each paycheck. In combination with the money that you save from Thrift (as above), you simply pay your tax bill when it comes due next April 15th.
        Deduct the taxes that are due yourself and put them away in a savings account or buy I-bonds, etc. You will be able to earn interest from the Oligarchy, instead of paying interest to the Oligarchy. This very simple action will prevent the use of your tax dollars by the Oligarchy, and the money will be delivered faithfully to the actual Constitutional government only.

*          *          *          *

        Payroll deductions for income tax are, in effect, an interest-free loan to the government. The government, in turn, uses that revenue to pay billions of dollars in interest annually on loans (via the National Debt) from the Oligarchy. (Bill Clinton ended his term in office with a budget surplus, which George Dubya has already spent, already requiring an increase in the National Debt!)

        Said another way: Your loan via income tax withholding to the government pays NO interest to you, while you – every taxpayer/citizen – pay/s interest on billions of dollars that the Oligarchy doesn't really need, so that they can accrue more money that they don't need!

        Once you have no consumer debt, and are paying down your mortgage faster than required, and stop media-driven Conspicuous Consumption, then the interest that you earn on your savings and investments takes money away from the Oligarchy.
        Nyah, nyah, nyah!

*          *          *          *

        John D. MacDonald's fictional 'salvage expert' Travis McGee had a secret compartment inside the boat where he lived, below the waterline, the purpose of which was to conceal $50,000 in cash that he called his 'F*** You Money': as long as he had not dipped into the hidden cash, then he could enjoy his life and turn down any job offer that did not appeal. If he used up his funds and had to access the stash to live on, then it was perhaps time to accept or seek another 'salvage' job, and thus the occasional plot was begun.
        When you have reduced your debt to zero (mortgage excepted), then you are halfway there. When you have one year's wages in hand – preferably not cash, but solid investments such as paid-off real estate or T-bills or I-bonds – then you too are free from the requirement to say "Yowzah, yowzah", to grovel at the feet of the Oligarchy in order to pay off your consumer debt. It takes a Free Individual to commit to such a course, and the Very Free Individual is one who has accomplished this goal.
